Drywall (gypsum board on a metal stud frame) has become the default way to add or reconfigure interior walls in Nepali offices, retail fit-outs and increasingly in homes — replacing brick partitioning for anything that isn't load-bearing.
Why drywall over brick for partitions
A brick partition wall needs masonry, plaster, and days of curing before it's paint-ready. A drywall partition of the same size goes up in a fraction of the time, needs no curing, and is lighter — meaning no additional foundation or slab loading consideration for upper floors.
What the system is actually made of
Galvanized steel C-studs and U-track form the frame, gypsum board is screwed to both faces, and the cavity is typically filled with rockwool or glasswool for thermal comfort and sound insulation — a plain unfilled drywall partition blocks far less noise than most buyers expect.
Installation, step by step
Track is fixed to floor and ceiling first, studs drop in at 400-600mm centers, then boards are screwed on with staggered joints, taped, and finished with joint compound before painting. Skipping proper joint taping is the most common cause of visible cracks along partition seams within the first year.
Where drywall isn't the right choice
Wet areas (bathroom walls facing direct water exposure), load-bearing walls, and any partition needing to carry heavy wall-mounted fixtures need either a cement-board variant, reinforced backing, or a different wall system entirely — standard gypsum board alone isn't rated for either case.
