Marble vs Granite: Choosing Natural Stone for Nepali Homes

Nepali marble from Kavre, Sindhupalchok and other mid-hill quarries has become a popular, more affordable alternative to imported Italian or Rajasthani stone.

Marble

Better suited to flooring, staircases and wall cladding in low-traffic, low-acid-exposure areas — living rooms, staircases, facades. Nepali marble in particular needs sealing every 12-18 months given monsoon humidity.

Granite

Harder, more scratch and stain resistant, and the standard choice for kitchen countertops and high-traffic flooring where marble would etch and dull over a few years.

Local vs imported

Nepali marble costs roughly 40-60% less than imported options and supports domestic quarrying, but color/vein consistency across a large area is harder to guarantee — always view the actual lot before ordering large quantities, not just a sample chip.

Maintenance reality check

Both stones need periodic sealing in Nepal's climate — buyers who skip this step are usually the ones disappointed by staining a year or two after installation, not because the stone itself failed.
