Scaffolding Safety on Nepali Construction Sites: What to Check

Bamboo scaffolding is still common in Nepal — here's how to evaluate it (and steel alternatives) for actual safety.

Bamboo scaffolding remains widely used across Nepal for cost reasons, but improperly lashed or aged bamboo is a leading cause of site injuries.

Bamboo scaffolding, done properly

If using bamboo, insist on fresh (not reused/weathered) poles, proper nylon rope or wire lashing at every joint (not just visually tied), and diagonal bracing every few bays — most bamboo scaffold failures come from missing bracing, not the material itself.

Steel tube-and-clamp alternatives

Steel scaffolding costs more to rent but is reusable, has standardized load ratings, and is now required by some municipalities and most serious contractors for buildings above 3-4 storeys.

What to inspect before workers climb

Base plates on firm, level ground (not loose soil), guardrails on working platforms above 2m, and toe boards to stop tools/debris from falling — these three items cover most preventable scaffold accidents.

Weather checks

After heavy monsoon rain, re-inspect bamboo lashings and steel base stability before resuming work — waterlogged ground shifts base plates, and wet bamboo lashings can loosen.
