Hydraulic vs traction vs pneumatic

Hydraulic lifts are the most common for homes — lower shaft/pit requirements and smoother ride, but need a machine room. Traction (gearless) lifts need less machine space and handle load-shedding better with smaller backup power. Pneumatic vacuum lifts need no pit or machine room at all but carry only 1-2 passengers and cost more per trip capacity.

Power backup matters more than the lift brand

Nepal's home lifts fail on power reliability more than mechanical faults — confirm the lift has an automatic rescue device (ARD) that lowers the car to the nearest floor during an outage, not just a battery backup that keeps lights on.

Shaft planning has to happen at design stage

Retrofitting a lift shaft into a completed structure is 2-3x more expensive than planning it into the RCC frame from the start — even if you're not installing the lift immediately, cast the shaft opening now.

A basic 2-3 person hydraulic home lift typically runs Rs 8-15 lakhs installed in Kathmandu Valley, with AMC (annual maintenance contract) an ongoing cost most owners underestimate at purchase time.
