Ready-mix concrete (RMC) batching plants have expanded rapidly around Kathmandu Valley, but site-mixed concrete is still the default outside major cities.

Where RMC wins

For large pours (rafts, slabs over 50 cubic meters) RMC gives consistent grade strength, saves site labor, and finishes the pour in hours instead of days. Quality control (mix design, slump testing) is handled at the plant.

Where site-mixing still makes sense

Small residential footings, remote sites without road access for transit mixers, and locations more than 60-90 minutes from the nearest batching plant — pumping time and transit delays start to compromise workability.

What to check with an RMC supplier

Ask for the mix design sheet, the plant's NS certification, and confirm pump/mixer scheduling in advance — Kathmandu traffic can delay a transit mixer enough to affect the pour's cold-joint risk.

Cost comparison

RMC typically costs 10-20% more per cubic meter than site-mixed concrete once you account for material only, but often comes out even or cheaper once labor, wastage, and curing-time savings are factored in for large pours.
