After the 2015 earthquake, Nepal's National Building Code tightened requirements on reinforcement steel ductility.

The difference

Fe500 and Fe500D share the same yield strength (500 MPa), but Fe500D guarantees higher elongation (16% vs 12%) — the bar stretches more before failure, absorbing seismic energy.

What to buy

For columns, beams and slabs in seismic zones (all of Nepal), specify Fe500D from a manufacturer with NS/IS certification. Check the bar's embossed marking and always demand a mill test certificate.

Storage on site

Keep bars on timber sleepers off the ground and cover them during monsoon to prevent rusting beyond the acceptable mill scale.
